The crown for the best 1stXV in Pretoria was up for grabs when Garsfontein and Menlopark met at Menlopark this afternoon. With Garsfontein beating Waterkloof (52-16) and Menlopark achieving the same last Saturday (55-21) and Affies and Pretoria Boys High out of the race for obvious reasons, this match was to decide on who's head the crown will rest.
Garsfontein started like a house on fire dominating everything on the field setting up camp in Menlopark's half for most of the first half. After an early converted penalty by Garsfontein, the two teams traded tries to end the first half with Garsfontein 17-14 in the lead. Menlopark's two tries were long distance efforts and only desperate defence kept Garsfontein from scoring more tries.
The second half saw the game lose its structure and that is when the dangerous backs of Garsfontein combines well with their forwards to run their opponents off their feet. With 10 minutes left Garsfontein was in the lead with 46-14 after they scored 29 unanswered points.
Menlopark scored two late converted tries to narrow the gap to a more respectable and true 28-46 loss.
