Jeppe and St Stithians scored 15 tries between them on Saturday in a 103-point thriller, won 54-49 by Jeppe in the end. With so many touchdowns, defence was obviously not the strong point of either side, but it was a case of attack first and both sides tried to run every ball they got at the opposition.
The result was a highly entertaining spectacle which saw Jeppe go 40-14 ahead early in the second half, only to see Saints score the next four tries in a row to go 42-40 up with 10 minutes to go.
Jeppe restored their lead directly from the ensuing kickoff and then stretched it to 57-42 thanks to a length of the field try rounded off by speedster Gerath Louw.
Saints weren’t finished, though, and they got one more, in the final minute. Louw scored twice for Jeppe, as did their captain, Boitumelo Tstasane. TJ Maguranyanga got two touchdowns for Saints.
Jeppe’s provincial flyhalf, Declan Raubenheimer made his first start of the season following a long injury layoff and put in a solid 60 minutes.
A feature of the game was the goalkicking, Karabo Moahldi converted all seven Saints tries, several of them from the touchline, and between them, Raubenheimer and Tsoane Tiro converted seven of Jeppe’s eight five-pointers.
